Charlottetown MP Responds to Federal Budget

Ottawa , ON– Charlottetown MP Shawn Murphy was surprised and disappointed in the 2010-2011 Federal Budget tabled today. “No matter what you were looking for in today’s budget, it just wasn’t there”, said Charlottetown MP Shawn Murphy.

“I was looking for certain directions including more funding for environmental programs; funding cuts for government advertising and contracts; a responsible plan to take this country out of the deficit we are now in; a plan to deal with the pension crisis and some mention of the demographic challenges facing this country.  There was absolutely nothing – nothing – nothing!  I realize there has to be some restraint but I was looking for some discussion as to the direction this country is heading.”

Mr. Murphy went on to say that although disappointed, he always looks for something positive. “The only glimmers of light I could find was an extremely small fund to assist young Canadians find their first job and the fact that the Government will not cut back on Public Service pensions.”

“The plan to get out of deficit is absolutely ridiculous.  The deficit this year is expected to be $53.8 billion which will be $49.2 billion in 2011.  What Jim Flaherty is saying is that these billions that are being spent on TV advertising, communications, polling, contracts, and waste are just going to end up on our children’s Visa account,” said Mr. Murphy.
