International Women’s Day

2010-03-08 |
This past Saturday I attended an event celebrating International Women’s Day, at the Guild of Charlottetown. Each year at this time, Canadians come together to celebrate women’s progress towards equality and their full participation in our society.
This important event marked the beginning of International Women’s Week, which began on March 7th and will end on 13th. The event was organized by Prince Edward Island’s International Women’s Day Committee, which worked closely with other women’s advocacy groups across the Island to create this important event.
For the first hour there was a trivia game which also functioned as a history lesson of the Women’s Movement, both locally and internationally. I have to admit our table didn’t do that well, although we enjoyed participating. Despite being a bit crowded, it was a great evening.
Former Islander Ruth Mathiang came from her current home in Toronto to attend the celebration. Ruth came to the Island in 2001 from the Sudan to attend UPEI.
There are a number of International Women’s Day events going on in Ottawa this week.
